Benni's Nursery

Updated: Feb 26, 2021

First pregnancy, first nursery!

The time has finally come! With four months to go, I am starting to think about our baby boy’s nursery.

When working on your first nursery, there are a couple of things to consider first:

  1. Is the nursery going to be permanent or will you be moving soon?

  2. Are you planning on co-sleeping? Perhaps a bedside crib is the best option for the first 6 months;

  3. Do you have another spare room or do want the nursery to also function as a guest room?

  4. Is there any furniture/ accessory that friends or family can lend you?

  5. Can you shuffle things around to make space in a clever way?

My husband and I purchased our house in March 2020. It came with three bedrooms, one living/dining room space and bathrooms. We immediately knew that having three bedrooms would probably be unnecessary, even in a pre-Covid environment. We fell in love with the house, but we knew this was not going to be our forever home so we turned one room into the living area for more space, leaving us with only one spare bedroom for possible guests and, perhaps, a baby.

As it was impossible for us to say when the baby would arrive – months, years, who knows! – we wanted the spare bedroom to have an adult feeling.

We turned one wall into a lovely green accent wall and decorated it with antique maps of London and Turin, my hometown. I admit, the furniture is basic IKEA furniture which we brought over from our previous flat as we thought it would be a shame to get rid of it. After all, the bed turns into a comfy double bed which is perfect for when family comes to visit.

With COVID and no guests to be seen, this room soon turned into my husband’s office. Now, I am not one of those people who has been enjoying working from home, but I cannot foresee offices opening again anytime soon. The question then arises: how are we going to turn this into a nursery/office room/guest bedroom? So many things to think about! I will be exploring the answers to these questions in forthcoming blogs, but in the meantime, I’m thinking: should I keep the room green? Should I use green on other walls as well? Which furniture should I keep?

Here I go, my ‘nesting’ months have officially started.
